How to Find Balance and Moderation

The concepts of balance and moderation are often used interchangeably but they are actually very different. Many health professionals are telling us to find balance; in our life, diet, job, and with our family. To add to the list, these same experts are also telling us to take everything in moderation. Yes, I too as a Certified Health Coach, recommend my clients find balance and moderation. Confused yet? Let’s start by defining what these terms actually mean.

Balance

As defined by www.dictionary.com:

a state of equilibrium or equipoise; equal distribution of weight, amount, etc.something used to produce equilibrium; counterpoise mental steadiness or emotional stability; habit of calm behavior, judgment, etc.a state of bodily equilibrium

When referring to health, wellness, and lifestyle I am always referring to being in “balance” as being in a state of equilibrium. We must strive to give an equal amount of effort to the important areas of our lives to find balance. Take our daily food intake for example. A balanced healthy plate of food consists of non-starchy vegetables, lean meat, and whole grains or starchy vegetables, with some healthy fat dispersed throughout. A balanced plate ensures that you will take in all of the nutrients you need on a daily basis.

Moderation

As defined by www.dictionary.com:

The quality of being moderate, restraint, avoidance of extremes or excess

A life of moderation is one without excess. This means never over doing it. Going back to our daily food intake; if you’re headed out to a birthday party after dinner and there are many desserts to choose from, moderation means choosing one slice of cake rather than every option on the table.

Here are some ways to have a healthy lifestyle filled with balance and moderation:

Balance healthy choices with a sweet treat. After a healthy meal have one square of dark chocolate.Balance exercise with rest. Aim for exercising 5 days per week and resting the other two.Balance working in front of a computer with mini breaks. Get up and stretch for a few minutes.Balance stress with down time. After a stressful day at work find a way to wind down.Balance familiarity with adventure. One weekend a month, try something new with your family or friends.Balance the old and the new. For every new piece of clothing you bring home, find one piece to donate.

In other words, try saying no to as many work related, family, and social related items as you say yes to. Taking steps in this direction will assist greatly in helping you find balance and moderation.
